Acute Epidural Hematoma developing after the Craniotomy for Traumatic Intracranial Hematoma on the Contralateral Side

Abstract
The authors described four instances of acute contralateral epidural hemato is that developed after craniotomy for traumatic intracranial hematomas ; 3 cases cf acute subdural hematomas with cerebral contusion, 1 case of subdural hygroma.
Each case had a linear skull fracture ipsilateral to the acute epidural hematoma, which might have injured the dural artery. The mechanism of this complication was not clearly understood, but it was suspected that bleeding of the injured dural artery ensued from the abrupt release of the mass effect caused by the intracranial hematoma.
When sudden brain swelling during craniotomy without obvious reason or a change for the worse on neurological finding after that is encountered, attention should be directed to acute epidural hematoma developed from the fracture site on the contralateral side.
